WHY should I have my racket strung now?

You shouldn’t wait for your strings to break as the restring will already be past its best performance. Strings naturally lose tension over time and this tension loss can result in an extreme loss of ball/shuttlecock control.

How often do I need to restring my racket?

This is a very broad question when you consider the many factors involved with your chosen racket sports. How often you play coupled with your skill level are going to determine the answer here. Higher skilled players will probably know the answer based on feel but for beginners the general rule of thumb is count how many times you play in a week and double it. This is how many times you should be stringing your racket per year.

For example you play 3 times per week that’s 3 weeks x2 = 6 restrings per year.

What difference does string tension make?

Think of jumping up and down on a trampoline. If the bed is soft, then you will gain lots of height, your feet sinking deep. If you stray to the edges, you will not go so high and your feet will not linger on the bed. This is the same for the ball/shuttlecock on the strings.

A soft stringbed will propel the ball/shuttlecock back with almost as much speed, while a tighter stringbed will do the job quicker and take away some of the ball/shuttlecock speed. The longer the ball/shuttlecock spends on the stringbed, the less control you have over where the ball/shuttlecock ends up, as the racket is always moving.

A tighter stringbed gets rid of the ball/shuttlecock quicker and so gives less error on ball/shuttlecock placement. Low tensions are better for sore arms and shoulders as there will be less shock and the arm has to work less hard. Take the time to experiment with varying tensions so that you find the tensions that suit your own game.

How should I take care of my rackets & strings?

Rackets and strings are high-performance equipment, so never leave the racket in the car boot to freeze or fry, and avoid the couch or backseat where someone WILL sit on them! Store at room temperature, not buried by anything heavy and never near a hot radiator. Keep separate from damp towels or clothing. Make a mark on each racket so that you can know which is which for restringing.

Why do strings break?

Strings break when they cannot stretch or when they abrade against each other. When the ball hits the middle of the stringbed, the surrounding strings stretch and take on the job of catapulting the ball back. But if the ball hits near to the racket edge, the strings next to the frame have nowhere to stretch into, and exceed their elastic limit.

When the mains (verticals) move against the crosses, the weaker of the two will gradually wear away until the fibres cannot take any more punishment and break. Multifilaments have thousands of tiny fibres inside that will get furry before they actually break. In cold weather, strings and rackets are stiffer and so you can expect strings to pop quicker in cold conditions, especially with a heavy, wet ball.

Do I need more than one racket? And if so, why?

Don’t have a spare racket? We will lend you a racket while we service yours so you can keep on playing!

Strings are always deteriorating, performance slipping away, so it’s always good to have a spare identical racket, especially if you have to leave one with the stringer. It is not a good idea to have to borrow a friend’s racket for a match. By all means experiment with as many rackets as you want to, but when you settle on your eventual choice, stick to that for serious play.

What if I already have my own string?

Thats fine, then you just pay £11 for us to put the string into your racket.

Beginners/Improvers

Beginners will be in the process of learning the various strokes, so will Initially lack swing speed and power. For them, lower tension and a soft synthetic gut string will allow their arms and shoulders to acclimatise to the new work demands and prevent conditions such as the dreaded Tennis Elbow or damaged rotator cuff in the shoulder.

A synthetic gut in a 1.30mm gauge would suit most rackets and playing styles while offering you a good combination of power & durability.

Intermediate/Club Players

As beginners progress into the Intermediate stages, then they will probably stay with the same string but will be seeking more control, so adding a few lbs to the string tension would definitely be helpful.

Advanced/Pro Players

Advanced players will lean towards the higher string tensions as they have developed a game that is reliant on more exacting ball/shuttlecock placement.

Option 1 (Maximum Control/Spin)

Most Advanced/Pro players are hitting the ball that much harder so therefore require much more control. A polyester string at around 58lbs will provide the needed control and spin to hit hard while also giving you added durability.

Option 2 (All Round Performance)

Many Pro’s now use hybrid restrings. This is where you mix and match 2 opposing string types to get the best of both worlds. String the racket with a polyester main string (down/vertical strings) and a Synthetic Gut or Multifilament cross string (across/horizontal strings) to get the control & spin from the poly and the power and comfort from the softer Syn Gut or Multi. We have pre-selected some outstanding hybrid combo’s for you to try.

Squash

Choose a 1.20mm Multifilament string up to 30lbs for added control. Use a 1.25mm string if you have too many early string breakages.

Tension

String between 27lbs & 30lbs depending on what control is required. Go higher for maximum control.

Badminton

String with a braided multifilament as already described.

Tension

String up to 26lbs. Beyond 26lbs and you will lose power and touch. These tensions are for players who generate really fast racket swing speed.

Check on the racket to see the max tension range. Ignore this at your peril!

Racketball
String

Choose a 1.30mm Multifilament.

Tension

String around 47lbs but go up to 50lbs if added control is required.

Senior Players

As this experience may also coincide with added years (happens to us all!), a soft multifilament at a lowish tension of around 52lbs will be of enormous benefit as this will absorb more shock and vibration whilst providing you effortless power.

Multifilaments are the ideal string type for sensitive arms and shoulders, Tennis Elbow sufferers and for those wishing to get the best possible playing comfort and effortless power.

Tension

Drop tensions down to around 54lbs. Opt for the lowest tension and softest strings for your game. You have earned it!!

Squash
String

Any of our multifilament strings at a lower tension of around 26lbs will suffice. Check that your grip is fresh so that you can grip it more easily. A thin overgrip is often a good idea, cheap to replace and easy to apply.

Tension

String at around 26lbs for added comfort.

Badminton
String

A thinner, softer multifilament of around 0.68mm, such as Wilson Smash 66.

Tension

Lower tensions around 20lbs for extra comfort.

Racketball
String

Prince Multifilament 1.25mm at around 40lbs, fresh grip or overgrip frequently for maximum grip.

Tension

String at around 40lbs and change the strings before they break at least every 3 months.

STRING TENSION

Tight for Control and Loose for Power. It depends what suits you.

We all play different and enjoy different playing styles. If you have any arm discomfort following a match then have a chat with the stringer regarding a softer string and lower tension. Don’t try to be a hero and play through Tennis Elbow as you will make it a lot worse.
